While better relations with China are certainly welcome, Ma's plans, especially for a single economic market, are unrealistic and are ultimately bad for the Taiwanese people. A common market is simply a fancy way of saying "unification". We have seen this in the EU; what started off as a common market is evolving into a federation, with Brussels calling the shots in many cases. The key difference between Europe and China is the presence of democratic institutions in the former. Taiwan's democratic institutions are still in their infancy, and democracy is openly scorned by the Chinese government. It would be easy for the "reformed" fascists on Taiwan, complicit with the authoritarian regime in China, to kill Taiwan's nascent liberal democracy in the name of a "common market". If Ma's plans are implemented, I will not be surprised if we begin to hear of bloodshed in Taiwan.
